All Grand Slams (Wins) - July, 6th, 2009 (after Wimbledon win)

'
Overall Wins

After his first French Open And sixth Wimbledon, Federer is in first place in the all time winners list, with 15 Grand Slam titles:

1 - Roger Federer - 15
2 - Pete Sampras - 14
3 - Roy Emerson - 12
4 - Rod Laver - 11
4 - Bjorn Borg - 11
6 - Bill Tilden - 10

Of these 6 players, Federer has the second best win-loss ratio in finals, with 15-5 (Sampras is 14-4);

He is currently tied both in second and in fourth place in the list of players that have won more titles in one Grand Slam during the open era:

1 - Pete Sampras (7 Wimbledons)
2 - Roger Federer (6 Wimbledons)
2 - Bjorn Borg (6 French Opens)
4 - Roger Federer (5 US Opens)
4 - Pete Sampras (5 U.S Opens)
4 - Bjorn Borg (5 Wimbledons)
4 - Jimmy Connors (5 U.S. Opens)
8 - John McEnroe (4 U.S. Opens)
8 - Andre Agassi (4 Australian Opens)
8 - Rafael Nadal (4 French Opens)

Federer has so many Grand Slam records by now that it's getting hard to organize them in any sort!

Consecutive final wins - reaching the final and winning

He is the only player in the Open era to have won his first 7 Grand Slam finals (reaching the final and winning), until his loss to Nadal in the French 06.

The former record of the open era was only 3, by Borg.

In the 19th century (!) Richard Sears and William Renshaw also won their first 7 Grand Slam finals.

Consecutive Grand Slam wins

He is the only player in open Era to have won 3 consecutive Grand Slams twice (Wimbledon 05 - Australian 06 and Wimbledon 06 - Australian 07).

On top of that, he also won Wimbledon 04 and the US 04 consecutivly, Wimbledon 07 and the US 07 and Roland Garros and Wimbledon 09.

Back to back wins

If we count back to back wins at Grand Slams in the open era, then Federer already tops the list, having acomplished that 7 times until now. On second place on the list is Sampras, wth 4 back to back wins.

Calender year feats

Federer is also the only player in history, male or female, to have won:

15 Grand Slams in 7 calender years (2003 to 2009)
14 Grand Slams in 6 calender years (2004 to 2009)
13 Grand Slams in 6 calender years (2003 to 2008)
12 Grand Slams in 5 calender years (2003 to 2007 and/or 2004 to 2008)
11 Grand Slams in 4 calender years (2004 to 2007)
8 Grand Slams in 3 calender years (2004 to 2006)
6 Grand Slams in 2 calender years (2006 to 2007)
3 Grand Slams in one calender year on three different ocasions (2004, 2006 and 2007)

By winning the 2007 Australian Open, Federer won his 6th Grand Slam singles title in 7 attempts, equalling Laver's accomplishment;

With his victory at the 2006 Australian Open, Federer became the first man to win three consecutive Grand Slam titles since Sampras in 1993-94. Federer repeated this feat at the 2007 Australian Open, making him the only man to achieve this feat twice in the open era.

By wining Wimbledon in 2007, he won his 7th Grand Slam singles title in his last 9 attempts; and

By winning the 2007 US Open, Federer won his 8th Grand Slam singles title in his last 10 attempts;

11 of his Grand Slam titles came in only 16 attempts; in fact, his first 12 Grand Slam titles came in 18 consective attemps, from Wimbledon 2003 till the US Open 2007.

No other male player has even come close to doing this and on the women's side, only Martina Navratilova came close by winning 11 Grand Slams singles titles out of 17 attempts.

Federer has won his 15 majors in a span of 25 Grand Slam events, going back to 2003. The best streak Sampras ever produced was winning nine of 17 in a span from 1993 to 1997. You have to go to the women's side to find comparable examples. Martina Navratilova won 14 of 23 majors from 1982 to '87 -- the densest concentration of championship excellence on record -- and Steffi Graf took 14 of 25 between 1988 and 1994.

Diferent Grand Slam titles

He is one of only six players to have one all 4 Grand Slams and one of only two players to have won them all in 3 different surfaces.

He is also the only male player in history to have won 3 different Grand Slam titles at least three times each (Australian Open: 3; Wimbledon: 6; U.S.Open: 5).

Federer is the only male player to win five consecutive Wimbledon singles titles (2003-2007), five consecutive U.S. Open singles titles (2004-2008), and two consecutive Australian Open (2006-2007) titles at the same time.

Federer is the only player, male or female, to win five consecutive Wimbledon singles titles (2003-2007) and five consecutive U.S. Open singles titles (2004-2008).

Federer has won the most consecutive titles in the Open Era at three different Slams: Australian Open = 2, Wimbledon = 6, US Open = 5 consecutive. This is the first time a single player has at least tied three Slam win streaks, let alone at the same time (not counting the trivial case at the inception of the Open Era where one Slam was the maximum).

Federer is the only male player to win five consecutive Wimbledon singles titles (2003-2007), five consecutive U.S. Open singles titles (2004-2008), and two consecutive Australian Open (2006-2007) titles at the same time, besides being runner up at three consecutive French Opens (2006-2008) also at the same time.

By winning Wimbledon 2007, Federer became the only man to have won at least 2 Grand Slam titles per year for 4 consecutive years and after his 2009 French Open win only the third (after Borg and Sampras, with 8 years) to win at least one Grand Slam title for 7 consecutive years.

Federer is the only player in history to win 2 of the same Grand Slam titles (ie. Wimbledon and US Open) for four consecutive years (2004-2007) simultaneously. Björn Borg won Wimbledon and the French Open four consecutive times each, but unlike Federer, not simultaneously.

Winning without dropping a set

There are only 5 players in the open era who have won Grand Slams without dropping a set:

Ken Rosewell - Australian Open 71
Ilie Nastase - French Open 73
Bjorn Borg - Wimbledon 76 and French Open 78 and 80 (3 times, a record)
Roger Federer - Australian Open 07
Rafael Nadal - French Open 08

Grand Slam titles sucessfully defended the next year

Federer is in first place in Grand Slams titles sucessefuly defended the next year, with 9 (1 Australian, 4 Wimbledons, 4 US Opens).

The Grand Slams that he won and wasn´t able to defend were the Australian Opens in 04 and 07 and Wimbledon in 2008, when he lost to Marat Safin in the semis in 2005 and Djokovic in the semis in 2008 and Nadal in the final in 2008.

Bjorn Borg has 8 sucesseful defenses, and he didn´t defend titles on two ocasions. Sampras is in third place with 6 sucesseful defences. Defending 8 of his 9 titles at one point is in itself another record Federer holds alone.

Percentage of games, sets and matches won at Grand Slams

(this next section is updated only up to the Australian Open of 2007; it will be further updated when I have the patience to do all the maths again or find it already done somewhere else)

If you take into acount the percentage of win-loss in sets played at Grand Slams, Federer stands in second place, having won 85% of all his matches (119 wins, 21 losses). Borg leads with 89,8% (141 wins, 16 losses).

Of all the players that played a minimum of 1000 games at Grand Slams, Federer has the third best win-loss percentage, with 59,3% (2706-1856); Only Rod Laver (59,8%) and Bjorn Borg (60,8%) are in front of him.

Match winning streaks at Grand Slams

Alongside Bjorn Borg, he is the only player to have 3 winning streaks of 18 matchs or more at Grand Slams (Two of Borg's streaks are shorter, though):

27 (Wimb 05 - French Open 06);
27 (Wimb 06 - French Open 07);
18 (Wimb 04 - Aus 05);
18 (Wimb 07 - AUs 08).

Having won Roland Garros and Wimbledon in 2009 he has another ongoing winning streak of 14 macthes.

Only Rod Laver has a longer winning streak, with 29 matches.
